9 days in Japan.
I could meet many people.


当校の藤井秀樹校長。
Mr. Hideki Fujii, a principal of our school.

銀座で写真展開催中のところをお邪魔した。4月にカンボジアでお会いさせていただいたが、そのときにシェムリアップの遺跡で撮影されたという作品も展示されていた。仮面をつけたモデルが遺跡に立つ写真だった。自分も現地では同じような遺跡に行って撮影していたが、校長先生の発想の大胆さと意外さに驚かされた。つまり、オリジナル性。写真を含め、物作りの世界ではこれがなければ生き延びることはできない。一方、自分は。。。。。。。
I visited his photo exhibition in Ginza. Some of the photos were from Cambodia where we met him in April. They were model photos wearing masks standing in the ruine. I also visited same kind of place in Cambodia, but my photos were just very common kind of photos. So I was so impressed and surprised by his such dynamic and unique ideas of photography. Originality is the point. Without your own originality, you can not survive in this field of creativity including photography. How about me? Oh, god......

当校の副校長になられた恩師の樋口健二先生。先生は過去約30年に渡り、毎月最終土曜日の夜、教え子の写真を見て下さっている。この集まりを「カトレア会」と言い、5月26日（土）の夜、私も2ヶ月ぶりに出席させてもらった。写真学校卒業以来、ここで毎回先生にご指導いただくことが、自分にとっての写真の拠り所となっている。
Mr. Kenji Higuchi, a newly appointed vice principal of our photo school. He has been teaching graduates from his classes for last 30 years. We call this meeting as "Cattleya" which was held last Saturday on May 26. Since my graduation from the photo school, I am photographically totally rely on this meeting.






そして、フィールドワークの一期生でその後研究科に進んだ学生たち。

海外フィールドワークの最中も痛感していることだが、日本に戻り皆さんの写真を撮らせてもらうと、日頃どれ程多くの方のお世話になっているのかということを益々実感する。感謝致します。
This is something what I feel during the course of our fieldwork trip, but when I come back to Japan and take pictures of people like above, I can feel much more seriously about how much I am depending or relying on them.

当初の予定通り5月21日から同29日まで、スクーリング期間をはさみ、長坂先生とバトンタッチする形で、現在私は日本に一時帰国している。
As per original schedule, I came back to Japan on May 21st to take a short break till May 29th during the schooling period. Mr. Nagasaka from Tokyo headquator is in Malaysia now on behalf of me to take care of the students.


5月20日夜、まず、マレーシア航空で首都のクアラルンプールからボルネオ島のコタキナバルへ。約3時間のフライト。
Evening flight on May 20 from Kuala Lumpr of Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu in Borneo. About 3 hours flight.



コタキナバルで約1時間の休憩後、フィリピン上空を横切り、一気に北へ。
After 1 hour break at Kota Kinabalu airport, we flew over Philippine to the north.



そうして、クアラルンプールの学校施設を出て14時間後、ようやく日本到着。
機内では通路側の席だったため、外の風景撮れず。
14 hours later after leaving the school facility in Kuala Lumpr, I at last arrived in Japan. Because I took an aisle seat, I could not take any photo from the window of the plane.



2ヶ月ぶりの日本は五月晴れでした。
I was away for 2 good months from Japan. Now it is one of the best period of the year in Japan in May in terms of weather, nice sunny days with no humidity.


ところで、インドは来月あたりからモンスーンに入るが、マレーシアのクアラルンプールのスクーリング施設には明日5月27日（日）午前9時ころ、飯塚先生と鈴木先生がご到着予定。台風のようなスクーリングが始まる。
By the way, monsoon season will come to India from next month. On the other hand, a typhoon like schooling session will start from around 9am on May 27th once 2 lecturers, Mr. Iizuka and Mr. Suzuki, arrive at our schooling facility tomorrow.

5月20日　May 20


マレーシア・クアラルンプールの学校施設に、学生が全員無事集合した。
これまで2ヶ月間で撮影した写真をもとに、ここでスクーリング（授業）がおこなわれる。東京からはフィールドワーク講師の飯塚先生と鈴木先生がいらっしゃり、後半の旅へつなげるため、お二人による厳しいご指導がおこなわれる。
All students gethered again in a school facility in Kuala Lumpr in Malaysia without any accident or trouble. Here we will do so called "schooling" (just like lectures) having 2 lecturers, Mr, Iizuka and Mr. Suzuki, from Tokyo to check the photos the students took in last 2 months. To continue the trip (the last two third of the trip) and to get better results, the lecters become quite serious and tough for the students.

クアラルンプール空港から藤森・佑木がタクシーで到着。先にマレーシア入りし、スクーリング準備をして下さっていた長坂先生が出迎えてくださった。長坂先生とはお久しぶりの再開で、うれしさのあまり佑木の前のゴミ箱に気づきませんでした。すいません！
Fujimori and Yuki arrived at the facility from Kuala Lumpr Airport by taxi. Mr. Nagasaka welcomed them. I was too excited to notice a big garbage can in front of Yuki. Sorry!



教室で。青Tシャツはウォンさん（マレーシア人写真家で当校卒業生。彼と長坂先生とで当施設の全ての準備をして下さった。お二人がいなければこの施設は回らない。）
In the class room. Mr. Won on blue T-shirt. He is from Malaysia and a graduate of our school. Mr. Won and Mr. Nagasaka worked so hard to check the facility and prepare everything for the shooling. Without them, schooling can not be realized.

夜中、何か食べ物はないかと２階のキッチンへ行くと、藤森が、「先生、去年先輩が残していったラーメンがありますよ」と、インスタントラーメンを見つけてくれた。よく見ると「奈」とマジック書きがしてあった。山口奈々子の「奈」だった。
I got hungry in the late evening so went to the kitchen upstairs. Fujimori then found something and said to me:-
"There are some instant noodles here of which the 1st year students left behind last year!"
Nanako Yamaguchi's initial "NA" was on the package of the noodle.

賞味期限は4ヶ月前に切れていたが、「乾燥麺だから大丈夫です」と藤森も言うので食べた。マレーシアで食べる夜食としては最高の味だった。山口奈々子、無断で食べました。ありがとう。
They were already expired 4 months ago, but Fujimori told me that since it was dry noodle there should not be a problem. It was actually very tasty as a late evening snack eating in Malaysia. Thanks Nanako !


クアラルンプール市内へ買物。ハードディスク１６０G約1万2千円を皆で購入。
Shopping in downtown KL. We bought hard disk 160G at about 100USD.

ボルネオ熱帯雨林
Welcome to the rain forest of Borneo Island


コタキナバルでは連日、ラフレシアの情報を探したが、結局花は見つからなかった。数日の滞在では、よほど運が良くない限りこの希少な花を見つけるのは無理なのかもしれない。フィールドワークの6ヶ月を丸々ボルネオで過ごすくらいの気持ちがなければ難しいのか？
I tried to find out good news on Rafflesia everyday in Kota Kinabalu in vain. It seems quite difficult for a few days travelors like me to see the flower unless you are very very lucky. Unless I spend whole 6 months fieldwork trip in Borneo, it seems impossible to find the flower.


それで、thus,


キナバル山（東南アジア最高峰、標高4095m）国立公園麓のジャングルを歩いてきた。
I visited Mt. Kinabalu National Park, the first World Heritage in Malaysia registered in 2000.

そこはマレーシアで初めて、2000年に世界遺産に指定された地域。
ここは低地の熱帯雨林から高地アルペン草原まで、4種類の気候帯に属し、非常に多くの動植物が生息する。
From lower rain forest to high altitude alpine, there are 4 climate zone in the area and because of that there are so many variety of flora and fauna.


そのリストは現在も更新中だが、今分かっているものだけでも、
Updating of the list of the flora and fauna are still going on, but so far there are:-


5000種類以上の花の咲く植物
1200種類のラン
26種類以上のツツジ
9種類のウツボカズラ（世界一大きな種類も含む）
80種類以上のイチジク
60種類以上のオークやチェスナット
100種類以上の哺乳類
326種類の鳥類


more than 5000 species of flowers
more than 1200 types of orchids
more than 26 types of azaleas
9 types of nepenthes (pitcher plant)
more than 80 types of fig trees
more than 60 types of oaks and chesnuts
more than 100 species of mammals
326 species of birds

そこはまさに自然の宝庫
The place is really a natural wonder land.


今回のトレッキングで最大の収穫は、初めてウツボカズラを見ることができたこと。これはツボの中に胃液とほぼ同じ成分の液体が入っており、そこに転落した虫を消化して栄養分とする食虫植物。最大のものは容積が3.5リットルにもなり、ネズミが中に落ちることもあるという。そのため、捕食植物と言った方が正しい。
The biggest finding for me during the visit to the jungle was to see a nepenthes (pitcher plant) for my first time. The pitcher has the same kind of riquid as human stomach to digest insects which fall off into it. The biggest pitcher got the size of 3.5 litters and even a mouse can drop into it. So it is better to call the plant as carnivorous plant.







そして、何といっても、ジャングルの持つ独特の、うっそうとした気配の中を歩くことができたこと。
Besides that, it was so good for me to be able to walk in the deep jungle.









しかも雨となり、文字通りの熱帯雨林。
It became even rain. So it was literally 'tropical rain forest".










しかし、防水機構のオリンパスE-1とμ770SWで雨の日も完璧！ アフリカでもそうだが、何が起きるか分からない自然の中の撮影やフィールドワークには欠かせない相棒。自然の中でこんなに頼りになる精密電子機器が他にあるのだろうか？
I enjoyed a lot in the heavy rain with my waterproofed Olypmus E-1 and myu770SW!! In the wild nature and during my fieldwork where anything can happen, I can't go with any other machine than Olympus. I mean, I don't think there is any other precision digital camera on which I can rely so much in this kind of wild and rough settings.


ボルネオのジャングルではどれほどの雨が降るのか。詳しくは下のデータご参照願うが、雨の降り出したジャングルの中でガイドさんが、「５ｍ！　熱帯雨林へようこそ！」と言った言葉がとても印象的だった。
How much of rain the Borneo tropical rain forest has? My guide told me when it came to rain:-
"5 meters! Welcome to the rain forest!!"

ちなみに、日本の年間降水量平均は1700ｍｍで世界平均（880ｍｍ）の約2倍。で、ボルネオの熱帯雨林は5ｍ（5000ｍｍ）。
We have average of 1700mm of rain/year in Japan which is about 2 times more than the world average of 880mm. How about Borneo? It has 5 meters (5000mm).

しかし、部分的には日本だって負けてはいない。屋久島がすごい。場所にもよるが、何と、約3ｍ（3000ｍｍ）から11ｍ（11000ｍｍ）の年間降水量。
Japan is also super in some area. Yakushima Island may be among the top in Japan. It can get huge amount of rain between 3 meters (3000mm) and 11 meters (11000mm) depending on the area.

話はボルネオに戻り、
OK, go back to Borneo.


トレッキングの最後に、地上４０ｍの所に設置されたキャノピーウォークが出来る場所があった。これは世界で一番高くなるムンガリス（メンガリス）という豆科の木の間に設置された吊り橋で、ジャングルの様子を上から観察することができる。
I also could do so called "canopy walk". It's like a a suspension bridge between the world highest trees set on 40 meters above the ground.

これは自分の足。My leg.





この高木は８０ｍ以上に成長し、The King of Treeという英名がつき、「ジャックと豆の木」のモデルになったとも言われている。豆の木などひょろひょろして小さいイメージしか持っていなかった子供のころ、「どうして豆の木がそんなに高くなるのか？」と、不思議に思ったが、この木を見て納得。
This tree can grow more than 80 meters above the ground. In English it's called as "
The King of Tree (Tallest, strongest, sturdiest tree)" It is said that this tree was the model of "Jack and the Beanstalk". Actually when I read the book when I was a child, I was wondered why the beanstalk could grow so high. To me beanstalk supposed to be just small. But now I know why.







短い滞在だったが、キナバル山の頂上付近も今回初めて見ることができ、やはり来て良かったと実感する一日だった。
It was such a short stay, but I really enjoyed and satisfied to come to there. I also could see the summit of Mt. Kinabalu for the first time.

このところ、エア・アジアという航空会社を使っての移動が続いている。この会社の売りは何と言ってもその破格の低運賃だろう。
We have been using Air Asia flights quite often nowadays. The biggest advantage of this company is it’s unbelievably low fare.


例えば、先日利用したマレーシアのペナン島からボルネオ島のコタキナバルまでの約3時間のフライト。この正規運賃が何とたったの約4300円。日本で言えば東京・札幌の往復にほぼ相当する。日本なら航空会社にもよるが、安くても恐らく２～3万円は下らないだろう。今日の新聞広告に載っていたのは、マレーシアのコタキナバルからタイのバンコクまで、5月中なら母の日にちなみ、母なら誰でも何とたったの約1500円！　キャンペーン価格とはいえ、一瞬、計算違いか？と思ったほどの価格だ。日本ならリムジンバスで新宿から成田空港に行くだけで3０００円かかる。


For example, it was only 4300yen (about 40 USD) for the 3 hours flight from Penang Island to Kota Kinabalu of Borneo Island in Malaysia. It is almost the same flight hour of round trip between Tokyo and Sapporo in Japan. Depending on air companies, but the air fare of the above flight should cost at least 20,000 to 30,000 yen (about 200 to 300 USD) in Japan. Their add on the today’s paper says that if you are “mom”, because May 13th was a mother’s day, air fare from Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok is only about 1500yen (about 12USD) till the end of May!! I could not believe it even if it was a campaing price. If in Japan, you need 3000yen (or about 30USD) to go only to the Tokyo International Airport by limousine bus from downtown Tokyo.





この破格さは、徹底したコストセーブによって成立している運賃なのだろう。切符は全てeチケット（コンピューターのホームページ上でチケット予約と購入を自分でやり、それをプリントアウトする）。飲み物などの機内サービスは有料。席は全席自由席。新聞記事によると空港での駐機時間は25分のみ。搭乗場所も空港の端の方が多い気がする（つまり駐機料金が安い場所？）、等々。


I suppose that such low price of Air Asia can be realized by their serious cost saving management. For instance, tickets are all e-tickets, there is no free in-flight service, free seating system, only 25-minute turnaround, and boarding gates are usually far (to save parking fees at airports?), etc.


それでも慣れてしまえば、まったく問題ない。
However, I have no quarrel about it. It’s just a matter of getting used to it. Much better than an expensive fare. Don’t you think?


その安さゆえ、エア・アジアのキャッチコピーは、
Because of it’s low fare, catch copy of Air Asia is:-


「これで誰もがご利用できます」
“Now everyone can fly”

まったくその通りだと思う。
I agree 100%.


ただ一つだけ、いつも頭を悩ます問題がある。チェックインバックの重量制限が１５ｋｇという点。これが困る。フィールドワークの学生も私も、まともに荷物を詰めるとバックパック一個の重量はすぐに２５ｋｇ前後になってしまう。つまり１０ｋｇオーバー。超過重量の料金は１ｋｇ当り１２リンギット（約430円）で、超過料金は4300円となる。つまり、運賃と同額になってしまうのだ。これが何とも馬鹿げた話でどうしても腑に落ちぬ。（と言っても、エアアジアの規定が正論であり、その制限を越えてしまっている自分に問題があるだけの話なのだが。。。。）　


However, there is only one problem which gives me headache always. The weight limitation of check-in bag is only 15kg. This is a problem. If I pack everything in my bag, the weight becomes 25kg very easily. That is 10kg more than the limitation. Since the over weight charge is 12 Ringgit (about 430yen or 4USD) per 1kg, I have to pay 4300yen (about 40USD) for 10kg. That is the same amount as the air fare itself! Oh my goodness! Why?? Well, actually it’s me who has a problem to try to check in a heaver bag than the Air Asia’s regulation. But, still…..


「何故、運賃と同じ金額をこの荷物に払わねばならぬのか」
Why should I possibly have to pay the same amount as the air fare for this stupid bag??


と、どうしても思ってしまう。
That’s what I say to myself at the check-in counter……


結局、苦肉の策として、重いものは全て機内持込みのバックに詰めるだけ詰めることにしている。それでも数キロはオーバーする。その都度、カウンターの受付の人に、
To solve the above problem, I nowadays try to put heavy items into my carry-in bags as much as possible. However, several kilograms can be still exceeded than the limitation. So whenever I have a problem, I try to persuade Air Asia counter staff by telling:-


「学生なんだから、安くして」「今日は日曜日なんだから、安くして」「母の日だから安くしろ」「あなたの国の素晴らしい写真を撮って、世界中に宣伝させてもらうから、安くして」となどと、どうしようもないことを言ってまけてもらおうとする。
“See, we are just students. Please discount.” “It’s a Sunday. So please discount.” “It a Mother’s Day!! So, please discount.” “We all try to take great photos of your country to advertise to all over the world, so please discount.” All are kind of nonsense but I should try at least.


しかし、向こうも、運賃安い分、荷物でしっかり取らないと元が取れぬ。そこは頑として譲らない。非常に強力である。「そこを何とか」と、しぶとく食い下がったとしても、まけてくれてせいぜい１ｋｇが関の山。
However, Air Asia can’t accept such nonsense, because otherwise they can get only minus profits. The staffs are always very hard cores. But still I also have to try. In the end, they kindly wave 1kg at most.


そこで、私が考えるエア・アジアの新しいキャッチフレーズがこれ。
New catch copy of Air Asia I came up with is, thus,:-


「これで誰もがご利用できます。もし、重量超過料金さえきちんとお支払いいただければ！」
“Now everyone can fly only if you pay the excess weight charge!”





そして明日、またエア・アジアに乗ります。
I will use Air Asia again tomorrow.

ペナン島からボルネオ島へ移動した。
We moved from Penang Island to Borneo Island.





ボルネオは世界で3番目に大きな島（一位はグリーンランド、二位はニューギニア）で、自然の宝庫。
Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guenia. The island is famous for it's rich nature.









今回の自分の目的は、ラフレシアという世界最大の花を撮影すること。花の直径は約１ｍにも達し、悪臭を放ちハエなどの昆虫をおびき寄せる食虫植物だ。
Main purpose of my visit here is to take photos of Rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world. The size of the flower reaches upto about 1 meter. It emits such terrible smell like toilet to attract and eat insects like flies.

しかし、However,


コタキナバル市内の観光局へ情報収集に行くも、またしても（去年同様）、「見つかっていない」とのこと。ラフレシアは咲くのに15ヶ月かかり、開花期間はたったの一週間程度。年中暑いこの島では、開花時期が特別あるわけではなく、誰かがジャングルで見つけることができるかどうかにかかっている。つまり、出会えるかどうかは、運次第の花なのだ。
The Tourist Office of Kota Kinabalu told me that they haven't found any information these days. It takes about 15 months for rafflasia to bloom and the flower stays only for about a week. Borneo is under the tropical weather, hot and humid, so there is no specific blooming season. In other words, unless someone find the flower in jungle, you can't even know. It is thus only depending on a luck.


いずれにせよ、根気よく、明日また観光局やラフレシアセンターに問い合わせをしようと思っている。
Anyway, I will go to the information center again tomorrow to hear the situation. Because, never know!

ペナン島はマレー、イスラム、中国、インドの各文化が混ざり合った不思議な街。ねっとりとした海の空気や街の様子はアフリカ東海岸（モンバサやダルエスサラーム）にもちょっとだけ雰囲気が似ている。
Penang Island has very unique atmosphere of cultural mixture of Malay, Islam, China, and India. Wet air from the ocean also gives you a kind of east African coast touch like Mombasa or Dar Es Salaam a little bit.

5月10日、タイ・バンコクから寝台車でマレーシアに向け出発した。
所要時間約22時間の旅。
All of us departed Bangkok, Thailand, for Butterworth, Malaysia, by train (sleeping coach).
It took us about 22 hours.

途中、タイ・マレーシア国境で一時停車。駅でタイの出国手続き、マレーシアの入国手続きが行われた。汽車で国境を越えるのは6ヶ月の旅程で今回だけ。他は飛行機、船、バス。
At the border, the train stopped for a while for immigration for both Thailand and Malaysia. This was the only border for our 6 months travel to cross by train. Otherwise, we cross borders by air, by ship, or by bus.

フェリーで対岸のペナン島に移動。
Took a ferry to Penang Island located just in front of Butterworth. About only 15 minutes away.

ペナン島は非常に暑い。気温38度（下の目盛）、湿度３５％（上の目盛）。

一期生の筋肉男・羽立 (http://www.npi.ac.jp/blog/pfw112/) から私のブログに書き込みがあった。
筋トレを復活させたらしい。


曰く、


「小スタンド30本を一回で運びます。目標は一日腕立て500回」


小スタンドというものがどれくらいの大きさと重さなのか知らないが、「小」というくらいだからものすごく小さな、せいぜい割り箸程度の代物なのだろう。それくらい私でも片手で持てる。これは彼のはったりと見た。しかし、腕立て500回という数字にはさすがに仰天した。私の10倍以上である。


そこで、若いもんには負けられぬという気持ちを込め、私も新たな目標を作ることにした。


「腕立て一日または一ヶ月～501回」




Muscle man, my former student Hadate (http://www.npi.ac.jp/blog/pfw112/), wrote a comment to my blog. He said he had started to work out again. According to his comment,


“I can carry 30 of small stands at a go. My aim is to do 500 times of push up per day.”


I don’t know the size nor the weight of a small stand, but it must be very small just like chopsticks because he said it’s small. So I don’t care about the stand. However, “500 times of push up per day” really hit me. That’s more than 10 times of my case.


I thus determined to have a new aim as below to overcome against such a young boy.


“Push up 501 times per day or at least per month”

Succeeding Ms. Yuri Tanimoto's intention who was my former student last year specializing on sport photography, I have been visiting the same Muay Thai gym (Sor Vorapin Gym) everyday where Tanimoto took me last year here in Bangkok to take photos and to do practice. At the gym, the same trainers are working very hard on us.

撮影が一段落すると、自分もミット打ちなどの練習に参加する。
After taking photos, I also join to the practice such as punching mitt, etc.


ご注意：　スパーリングなど危険な練習はありませんので、ご安心ください。引率業務に差し支えるような危険なことは一切致しません。　
Note: I don't do any dangerous practices such as sparring. So please don't worry. I won't do anything dangerous for me to continue my duty as a lecturer to take care of my students.


谷本は知ってると思うが、これが、きつい。昨年はわずか2ラウンドでギブアップだった。そこで、今年は去年のリベンジと思い、今回のバンコクに標準をあわせたトレーニングを日本出発3ヶ月前から密かに積んできた。目標は5ラウンド。
As Tanimoto must know, the practice is just very hard. I gave up after only 2 rounds last year. It is for me the revenge this year. In fact, I have been working out secretly aiming at Bangkok from December last year. My aim was 5 rounds.


その甲斐あり（というか、あまりなし、というか）、今回は3ラウンドまで何とか持ちこたえることができた。前回はパンチのみの2ラウンドだったが、今回はキックも入れての3ラウンドだった。ただし、3ラウンド目は、ひざげりがほとんど上がらず、キックの空振りでしりもちをつくシーンではトレーナーに笑われた。家で一人練習するのと、実際に人間相手にやるのとでは、その激しさと苦しさに雲泥の違いがある。延々とやらされる縄跳びだけで、腕がつる。腹筋では完全に伸びた。汗が滝のように流れ出る。
Due to my hard work (or, I should put this way. Although I worked out so hard in Japan,), I could do upto 3 rounds this time. It was only punching last year, but I included both punching and kicking this time. However, my knee (knee kick) could not go up during the last round. When I missed the mitt and kicked only the air and slipped down, my trainer laughed at me........ Such a shame!. Training alone at home and training at a gym against a trainer were completely defferent. It was so rough and hard. Even long long jumping lope caused my arm muscle-pull. Push-up was, too hard and it finished me.... I sweated like a river.


しかし、連続ではなかったが、更に追加で2ラウンドやらせてもらった。結局、合計で5ラウンド。条件付きとは言え、何とか目標達成！
It was not continuous, but I added 2 more rounds to make 5 in total. I thus could clear my long wished goal!!





ところで、私はバンコクでは午前中、ホテルそばの公園で撮影しているが、ここに何と、バーベルなど筋トレセット一式が用意されている。使用料は午前中ならただ（管理人がいないため）。ムキムキの連中が朝からバーベルを上げている。あの羽立（一期生の筋肉男）がいないのが残念至極。


この公園は東京で言えば、さしずめ、日比谷公園か新宿御苑のような場所。そんな場所にバーベルセットが置かれているのは、さすがにムエタイの国だけあると関心しきり。そういえば、タイ以外では、韓国の公園にもバーベルが用意されていたので昨年、驚いた記憶がある。アメリカではロスアンゼルスのデニスビーチが凄い。ハリウッドのアクションスターのような輩がうじゃうじゃバーベルを上げている。


I usually visit a park nearby my hotel in Bangkok in the morning. In the park, believe or not, barbell set is there for free in the morning because no management staff is there. So many muscle men are there to lift up those weights.


This park is just like Central Park of New York City. I can imagine why such barbell set are there for free. Because it is a kingdom of Muay Thai here! It's like Denis Beach of Los Angels where action star look men are pushing the weights under the sun.

話は前後しますが、サムイ島の海、曇ってはいましたが、夕方の中間色はとても印象的でした。
Thinking back of the ocean of Samui Island, it was cloudy, but I liked it's mild color to be seen in the late afternoon.

国連主催による地球温暖化に関する会議（IPCC)が当地バンコクで先週開催された。
その報告は、


「今後20年から30年における二酸化炭素排出量軽減の努力が、長期的な地球温暖化を決定付け。。。（中略）。。。。気温が摂氏2度上昇すると、破局的な事態を招く。。。」


と警告する。


United Nation Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) was held here in Bangkok last week. According to the report, "mitigation effort over the next 2 or 3 decades will determine the long term global temperature increase. ...... 2 degree celsius will cause catastrphic condition" .

先日、私の古い友人エリカ（大学時代のクラスメート。アメリカ人）からメールが来た。彼女は結婚し現在ドイツ在住。ドイツの人々が環境問題にどのように取り組んでいるのか、とても興味深い内容が書かれていたので、その一部を紹介しようと思う。


「ドイツではこの7週間暑く乾燥した気候が続いており、観測史上最も暑い4月となりました。これには一種の恐怖を感じざる得ません。私たちは異常気候がなんとか止まるよう願い、自然資源の利用には注意を払うよう努力しています。ドイツ人は環境のことをよく考えていて、環境を守るため様々なことが行われています。たとえば、私の家でもトイレや洗濯機用に雨水を使う設備を備え、屋根には太陽電池。外出には出来る限り公共の交通機関や自転車を使います。このように、自分たちで出来る限りのことをするよう努力しています。アメリカ人ももう少しこのようなことを考えてくれるといいのに。。。。」


My old friend Erica, my former college mate in the US who lives in Germany for many years now, told me in her e-mail very important and interesting thing as to how her family and German people are trying to deal with envirnmental issue.


I'd like to introduce what she mentioned in her mail. She said:-


"The weather here (Germany) has been extremely sunny and warm and dry for the past 7 weeks. It was the warmest April ever registered since they have recorded weather data. That is kind of scary, and we are trying to be careful with our natural resources so that the climate change can maybe be stopped. The Germans are very aware of the environment and a lot of measures to protect the environment are taken. We have a rainwater collector to use for our toilets and wash machine, solar panels on our roof and we ride public transportation or bikes whenever we can. So at least we try to do our part. If only more Americans would think that way!


彼女のメールで印象的なのは、環境問題をscary（恐ろしい）という言葉を使って表している点。この問題を、人事ではなく、まさに自分たちに関わる重大事と考えているからこそ、トイレや洗濯に雨水を使うということも当然のように出来るのだろう。一方で自分は一体、どれほど環境のことを考えて暮らしているのか。


彼女はアメリカ人故、アメリカ人を引き合いに出しているが、これは自分を含め、我々日本人にも全く同じことが言えるのではないか。我々もあまりにも資源の無駄使いが多すぎるのではないだろうか。今こそケニアのマータイ氏（ノーベル賞受賞者）が提唱する「もったいない」の精神を真剣に考えるときが来ているのだと思う。

「気候について行動を起こすとき」なのだ。（新聞の見出しより）


Impressive part of her mail is that she uses the word "scary" to describe her feeling against the environmental issue. For her it is not something happening somewhere far, but it is a real serious matter to face. That may be the reason why she should use rain water for her toilet and washing. How about me? What do I consider or do against the environmental issue?? Nothing..........


Because Erica is American, I think she quoted only American. However, I must say that this is the same to our Japanese including, of course, myself. I think that we waste so much of natural resources. Nobel awarded Dr. Mathai's "mottainai (save the resources)" mind is, I think, really needed to be taken action now just like the heading of the paper says:-


"Time for action on climate"

タイ南部のサムイ島へやってきた。
タイ屈指のきれいさを誇る島、な、はずだった。
Samui Island, the sothern part of Thailand. This island is famous for it's beautiful ocean.


しかし、島は雨季に入ってしまい、連日の雨（スコール）。写真も、まったく不調。
However, it is such unfortunate that the rainy season has already come to the island. It is raining, or it is a big shower everyday..... Why now?? I have not taken good photos at all here....





美しい海の代わりに、洪水をどうぞ。

タイの北７００ｋｍにあるチェンマイという町。木材を山から運び出すために象が使われている。その象に乗って村の周辺をトレッキング。
Chiangmai, about 700km north from Bangkok. Elephants have been used there to carry tinbers from the mountain nearby. We had a elephant ride to treck around in the bush near the village.
