Chers futurs collegues photographes-A message to students from Mr. Salgado

A message to students from Mr. Salgado
It was a big surprise for me to be invited for my co-operation in the development of a new course in documentary photography at Nippon Photography Institute in Japan. I had been thinking that most photography schools in Japan had already provided a program involving photographic fieldwork. However, sad to say, it seems that photography students in Japan currently have no such learning environment.

Documentary photography is very important and essential for every society in the world. For me, documentary photography functions like a mirror, providing a chance to see and know each other by revealing the true nature of our community, within any society. And each of us can grow and develop as an individual through involvement in documentary photography interacting with society.

I have written as follows in the prologue of my new photographic project, entitled 'Genesis'

"International conferences have been organized to discuss the state of the earth affected by constant urban development and the effects on the quality of water, forest destruction, regional poverty, and even the epidemic of aids. Everybody has material desires and wants and will do what it takes to get an affluent lifestyle. However, many people will not seriously stand up or fight for the rights of a minority of people suffering from poverty or other squalor conditions. Most of us live in a privileged material world and tend to forget the struggle of many human beings on this earth. Protests for the rights of poverty-stricken minorities are usually written superficially in the media and even if you read these printed stories, you still cannot visualize their plight."

So, international photographers can document the truth using the tools and techniques of documentary photography, exposing to the world the deprivations and tribulations these minorities of the world suffer and empower these people by published photographs.

I seriously hope you will take real action and engage yourself in this rewarding vocation and career of a Documentary Photographer. To truly be an excellent documentary photographer you need to open your heart and set forth your will, without compromise.
